Melissa Thorne is a practicing painter living in Los Angeles.
Her paintings address the intersection of vernacular craft and high modernist design. Recent paintings connect imagery from craft instruction, home improvement, amateur architecture, self-help literature, religious movements, and natural phenomena. Over the past year, her work has grown to include an overt social component, in which paintings are made in direct response to specific experiences, individuals, and communities.
Prior to joining UCR, Melissa taught at CalArts, USC, Otis College of Art and Design, Scripps College, and at the graduate school of California College of the Arts, San Francisco. She has received artist residencies at the Ucross Foundation (Wyoming), The Santa Fe Art Institute (New Mexico), The Core Program (Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas), and the Bemis Center (Nebraska). Her work has been shown internationally. She is represented by Galerie Schmidt Maczollek (Cologne, Germany), and Devin Borden Hiram Butler (Houston, TX).
In addition to her studio practice, Thorne performs and records with the band Fol Chen.
